Another outdoor sport will be swinging sticks for a state title in Missoula this weekend as the lacrosse state championships come to the Garden City.

And Missoula’s girls varsity team can’t wait to take the field. The ladies are dominating this year, and roll into state on an 11-game winning streak. But if you haven’t heard of them, you’re not alone. They almost never get to play home games, which makes this weekend even more special.

“It would promote the sport more if we had it around, I would think,” said senior Makenna Reisner who goes to school in Drummond. “So, I’m really excited for the weekend, cause it hopefully will get more girls out to play, or just more people to play lacrosse in general.”

“I’m so excited. We never have home games,” said Hellgate senior Brooke Hess-Homeier. “Like, this is our real first legit home game, and it’s going to be so fun. We’re going to, hopefully a lot of people come out and watch us.”

More and more towns are bringing teams to state. And this year, the Flathead lacrosse club will join in the fun for the first time. The squad began playing five years ago and now they have enough players for a full high school team.

And while they haven’t won a game yet this year and don’t bring high expectations to this weekend’s tournament, they do expect the trip to Missoula to help build the program.

“For our team, probably just a win during the weekend coming up would probably be a huge success for them,” said coach Eric Hanson. “But also just getting a win and seeing the other teams–the Billings team, and also the ten-sticks team just started this year. So those will probably be the closest teams that we can compete with.”

“It’s so much better now, because you’re playing kids that are your age–have your same physical abilities, and it makes the game a lot easier,” said freshman Scott Kahle.

The Montana lacrosse state championships hit the field in Missoula on Saturday and features girls varsity, boys varsity, and middle school teams.
